Praising Oneself
There was a Kingdom known as Chandan-puri. A king named as Vishnudatta used
to rule this Kingdom. He always saw the wellbeing of the
people & appreciated their merit. Vishnudatta once wanted to appoint a new minister for his
kingdom. Instead of appointing a chieftain's
son on the basis of hereditary principle, he decided to appoint one clever
young person from the kingdom & made a public announcement. On hearing this, Krishna Kumar's
guru thought that he is a very suitable candidate for the post. Hence the guru asked him to go to a
royal court. Krishna Kumar presented himself to a royal
court considering Guru's directive worthy to be most reverently regarded. There were many young people. Some of them were from royal family & the relatives of
chieftain's. After preliminary tests, some were asked to present themselves before the
King. Vishnudatta selected two youth cut of this lot. One of them was a chieftain's sun & another was Krishna
Kumar. When the king asked chieftain's son to
present his bio-data, he described his qualities such as his reading,
recitation, war strategy, games like chess etc. Then king asked
Krishna Kumar to present his bio-data. He said, “My guru has taught me all this but my
Lord you will be able to understand only when you observes the practical
application of these qualities. How can one praise oneself?” On heaving Krishna Kumar's reply, the
king remembered the saying, ‘one
who praises oneself is nobody but a fool.’ The
king rejected chieftain's son & appointed Krishna Kumar.
Moral: Nobody to praise oneself.
आपुली आपण करी स्तुती
चंदनपुरी
नावाचे एक राज्य होते. तेथे विष्णुदत्त नावाचा राजा
राज्य करीत होता. तो प्रजाहितकारी आणि
गुणग्राहक होता. विष्णुदत्त राजाला आपल्या राज्यासाठी एक नवीन प्रधान
नेमायचा होता. कुणातरी सरदाराच्या मुलालाच
वंशपरंपरेने नेमण्यापेक्षा राज्यातील हुशार तरुणाची निवड करावी असे त्याने ठरवले व
त्याप्रमाणे दवंडी पिटवली. दवंडी ऐकल्यावर कृष्णकुमार च्या गुरूजींना कृष्णकुमार या पदासाठी
अत्यंत योग्य आहे असे वाटले. म्हणून गुरुजींनी
त्याला त्यासाठी विष्णुदत्त राजाच्या दरबारात जायला सांगितले. गुरु आज्ञा शिरसावंद्य
मानून कृष्णकुमार दरबारात हजर झाला. तेथे अनेक तरुण होते. अनेक जण राजघराण्याशी व सरदारांच्या नातेवाईकांशी संबंधित होते. प्राथमिक परीक्षेनंतर काही तरुणांना
राजापुढे उभे करण्यात आले. विष्णुदत्त राजाने त्यातून दोन तरुणांची निवड केली. त्यात एक सरदाराचा मुलगा व दुसरा कृष्णकुमार हे होते राजाने सरदाराच्या मुलाला स्वतःविषयी माहिती विचारताच त्याने वाचन, पठण, लढाईतले डावपेच, बुद्धिबळासारखे खेळ अशा आपल्या
सर्वगुणांचे वर्णन कथन केले. नंतर राजाने कृष्णकुमारला स्वत: बद्दल सांगायला लावले. तेव्हा
तो म्हणाला,
"महाराज, माझ्या गुरूंनी मला हे सर्व
शिकवलं आहे पण मला खरंच येत आहे का नाही हे तुम्ही प्रत्यक्ष पाहिले तरच कळू शकेल. मी माझ्याच तोंडाने
माझे गुणगान कसे गाऊ ?” कृष्णकुमारचे उत्तर ऐकताच- 'आपली
आपण करी स्तुती तो एक मूर्ख' हे वचन राजाला आठवले .त्यांनी
सरदारपुत्राला नाकारून कृष्णकुमारची निवड केली.
तात्पर्य: आपली स्तुती आपण स्वतःच करू नये.
