Clever Mongoose

This is a story of a talented Mongoose. On the banks of a big river, there lived a Mongoose in a hollow space of an ancient banyan tree. In the same river big Crocodiles used to live. It was a hobby of the Mongoose to have a walk around the banks of the river. However the Crocodiles used to wait for a day on which they shall be able to hunt the Mongoose. But the Mongoose was very clever & alert. It never got trapped in the clutches of the Crocodiles. Once at the other bank of the river trees were laden with sweet fruits.  The Mongoose saw it. Its mouth started watering by seeing the fruits. But to reach at the other end of the river was the big problem in front of him. Suddenly it struck with an idea. It called one of the Crocodiles in the river. Crocodile came to it. Mongoose said to her "I have been sent by the king as wishes to give a feast to all the Crocodiles. The King has further told me to count all the Crocodiles. So come in a single line so that I can count the exact number." The Crocodile then asked all the Crocodiles to be in a river forming single line.  When all the Crocodiles formed a single line, the Mongoose counted all the Crocodiles one by one by standing on their backs & thus reached at the other side of the river. As soon as it reached there, it ran away towards the fruit garden.  

Moral: Wisdom is greater than strength.

हुशार मुंगूस

        ही कथा आहे एका हुशार मुंगसाची. एका मोठ्या नदीच्या काठावर असलेल्या एका पुराण वडाच्या झाडाच्या ढोलीत एक मुंगूस राहात होते. त्या नदीत मोठ मोठ्या मगरी राहात असत. नदीच्या काठावर फिरण्याचा मुंगसाचा आवडता छंद होता. त्यामुळे कधी ना कधी या मुंगसाची शिकार करता येईल याची त्या मगरी वाट पाहात असत. परंतु मुंगूस खूप हुशार आणि सावध होते. ते कधीच मगरींच्या तावडीत सापडले नाही. एकदा नदीच्या पलीकडच्या तीरावरील झाडांना खूप मधुर फळे लागलेली होती. ती मुंगसाने पाहिली. फळे पाहून त्याच्या तोंडाला पाणी सुटले.  पण पैलतीरी जाणे ही एक फार मोठी समस्या त्याच्या समोर होती. अचानक त्याला एक कल्पना सुचली. त्याने नदीतील एका मगरीला जवळ बोलावले. मगर त्याच्याकडे आली. मुंगूस तिला म्हणाले, "मला राजाने पाठवलं आहे. उद्या राजाकडून सर्व मगरींना मेजवानी दिली जाणार आहे. पाण्यात किती मगरी आहेत हे मोजण्याचं काम राजाने मला सांगितलं आहे. तेव्हा सर्व मगरींना पाण्यावरती येऊन एका रांगेत उभं राहायला सांग म्हणजे मला त्यांची संख्या मोजता येईल." त्या मगरीनी सर्व मगरींना नदीत रांगेने उभं राहायला सांगितलं.  सर्व मगरी रांगेत उभ्या राहिल्यावर मगरींची संख्या मोजत प्रत्येक मगरीच्या पाठीवरून मुंगूस पैलतीरावर पोहोचले. पैलतीर लागताच फळांच्या बागेकडे धावत निघून गेले.
